Ashlocke Holdings
Sub cinere, semen
Under the ash, the seed
The House
Ashlocke Holdings is a private, family-governed investment institution active across real assets, credit, specialty insurance, private equity and infrastructure.
We deploy exclusively our own balance sheet. We have never taken outside limited partners, never listed a security, and never had a fundraising cycle. There is no fund behind us, and no clock attached to what we commit.
A Note from the Chair
Most of the capital you will be offered comes with a clock attached. A fund has a life. A public company has a quarter.
We have none of these things.
We are not clever. We are not fast. We are still here. If that is the kind of partner you are looking for, we should speak.
The Chair
Principles
Seven, first set down by our founder. They have not been amended. Four are given here.
-
I
We invest in the durable layer.
Fashions sit on top of things. We prefer to own the things underneath — the land, the right of way, the licence, the interconnection. The tenant may change. The ground does not.
-
II
We are partners, not principals.
We provide capital, structure and counsel, and we leave operations to operators. In seven generations we have never removed a founder we backed.
-
III
We think in assets, not in returns.
Currencies are opinions. Marks are estimates. Title is a fact. Where we can be paid in the thing itself rather than in a claim on the thing, we prefer it.
-
IV
We give back.
Sustained prosperity is not possible in a society that is not itself sustained. Our charitable commitments are substantial, long-dated, and not contingent on results.
We are not in the business of fortune. We are in the business of remaining.
Permanent Capital
Ashlocke Holdings is not owned by the Ashlocke family. It is not owned by anyone.
The institution is held by a perpetual foundation whose designated beneficiary is the continuing enterprise itself. Family members serve as officers — appointed, salaried, and accountable to trustees. They hold no shares, because no shares exist.
-
There is no term.
We have held positions for eleven decades. We will hold yours as long as it should be held.
-
There is no redemption risk.
No investor can withdraw from us, because there are no investors. We are structurally incapable of becoming a forced seller.
-
There is no succession event.
Closely held businesses and multi-generational assets are not exposed to the retirement of a principal on our side of the table. We do not have principals. We have offices.
Present Activity
Selected areas. Not exhaustive.
- Real Assets
- Agricultural land, water rights, timber, and utility interconnection and transmission rights.
- Infrastructure
- Civic and logistics facilities held on long ground leases; fibre and conduit easements; power development.
- Specialty Insurance
- Underwriting and reinsurance — the original business, and still the house's discipline.
- Healthcare Logistics
- Pharmaceutical warehousing and distribution across four continents.
- Technology
- Commodity semiconductor manufacture, memory, and asset-recovery services.
Stewardship
The Ashlocke Foundation commits in perpetuity across ocean restoration, climate adaptation in coastal communities, archival preservation, and the conservation of historic landscapes.
Commitments are endowed, not annual, and are not contingent on the performance of the investment operations. We regard this as the only honest way to give.
